Monkey Pose (Hanumanasana)

What is Monkey Pose?

Hanumanasana, also known as Monkey Pose, is a highly respected yoga pose that represents strength, flexibility, and spiritual dedication. This stance is named after Hanuman, a great figure in Hindu mythology famed for his undying commitment and exceptional powers. It represents courage and humility.

This position is not recommended for beginners and should only be attempted by intermediate-to-advanced yogis with strong hip opening in their lower body.

Beginning in a sitting position, stimulate your inner thighs and glutes. While concentrating on your breathing, gradually stretch your legs to the sides as far as your body allows. Monkey posture promotes blood flow to the legs while reducing stress.

How to Perform?

  • Start by squatting on your left knee and placing your right foot in front of it.
  • The distance between the right foot and the left knee must be around 30 cm.
  • Place both palms on the ground on each side of the right foot.
  • Slide your right foot forwards and rest your palms on the ground.
  • Straighten both legs by stretching the right foot forwards and the left foot back as much as feasible.
  • The legs and pelvis are in a straight line, with the buttocks reaching the floor.
  • Relax your body by bringing your hands together in the Anjali mudra and pushing on your chest.
  • Hold the posture for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Repeat the posture with alternate leg placements.
  • Finally, take a minute or two to relax by extending both legs forward.

Benefits:

  1. Makes the legs toned:
The hamstrings, thighs, groin, and hip flexors are among the leg muscles that are strengthened and toned by the complete extension of the legs in Hanumanasana.
  2. Increases the flexibility of the spine:
Because the legs are completely stretched, Hanumanasana develops upper body straightening and, hence, spine flexibility. The spine becomes more flexible and supple as a result of the spinal muscles being stretched, which also helps prana move from the nostrils to the upper back.
  3. Promotes reproductive well-being:
Hanumanasana stimulates the reproductive organs by allowing the pelvis to sustain the body’s weight and maintain equilibrium. The posture supports the reproductive system because of its deep stretch and enhanced circulation, which are beneficial to the reproductive organs’ health.
  4. Encourages the digestive system:
Hanumanasana’s abdominal muscular stretching provides a natural massage to the internal organs. Better digestion and general digestive health are encouraged by this stimulation, which also makes the digestive organs more effective.
  5. Encourages the reproductive organs to function.

Follow-up Poses:

  • Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)
  • One-Legged King Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)
  • wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend (Upavistha Konasana)
  • Lord of Dance Pose (Natarajasana)

Modifications:

Yoga blocks: When practicing the Hanuman posture, lay a block on each side of your front foot. Stretch your legs even more once you’ve placed your hands on the block. Blocks facilitate easy stretching, heart opening, and back muscle straightening. It is especially beneficial to beginners.

Bolster: Hold the Hanuman asana in its initial position and place a bolster between the front foot and the rear knee. It facilitates the position and keeps the hips square.

Blanket: At the start of the position, place a folded blanket beneath the back knee. Then do more actions. It will ease your transition into the posture and keep your knee from hurting.

Variations:

Ardha Hanumanasana (Half Monkey Pose):

This is a simple Hanumanasana variant. Bring your left foot forward between your palms from the Downward-Facing Dog position. If you need to reduce the severity of this stretch, you can also place yoga blocks beneath your palms.

Bend your leg on the floor behind you. Sit slightly back on your right heel while keeping your left leg straight ahead of you.
Lean your torso over your left leg to stretch your inner thighs, glutes, hamstrings, spine, and pelvis. Do this for 20 to 30 seconds on each side if you’re a beginner.

Keep on performing. Ardha Hanumanasana is performed by taking a breath and raising both arms above your head. Lean your torso forward over your left leg after exhaling.

This stretch is a great method for beginners to work their hamstrings and glutes. For increased flexibility, it is advised to hold this pose consistently for 30 to 90 seconds on each side.

At last, release your breath and begin to bend forward.

Precautions & Contraindications:

  • Do not execute Hanuman asana if you have a hernia or a slipped disc.
  • Those who have sciatica should avoid this position.
  • If your hip joint is dislocated, avoid this posture.
  • Avoid this pose as it can cause injuries to the knees, ankles, hamstrings, hips, and pelvis.
  • It is not recommended for pregnant ladies to perform Hanuman asana.

Common Mistakes:

Not Squaring Hips: To keep alignment, keep your hips facing forward.
Pushing Too Far: Take it slow to avoid damage and overstretching. For support, use props.
